On Saturday Danielle and I had the opportunity to take part in an event for a local community of displaced people. Most of the people living in this particular housing complex have recently come to the US from all over the world. Many have only been in the US for less than a year and are working to begin their new life here. We wanted to help put on this event to be able to build relationships with the people there and be able to help them adapt to their new home.
Soccer, in this and many other instances, is the great unifier. It brings people together who have little else in common. You don’t need the same language, skin color or worldview. You just need a ball, some space and a few other people to bridge cutural and relational gaps that seem otherwise impassable.
That is what Saturday was about. It was about bridging the gaps between the different people and nationalities living in the area and helping us to integrate into the community as well. We made many friends on Saturday and look forward to pursuing those friendships in the months to come.
